Frequently Asked Questions

Who? Why?

Wordcurious was created by Norman Clarke. I'm a programmer originally from the USA, now living in Buenos Aires Argentina. I made this site because I found that I needed an easy way to keep track of new Spanish vocabulary I was learning when I moved to Argentina.

You know... when you're a foreigner somewhere and your toilet is broken and you need to call the plumber... sometimes you want to look up a list of plumbing-related words first so that you can describe the problem, and the plumber doesn't think you're an idiot.

I've also had a lifelong interest in languages and linguistics, and my wife is a translator and interpreter. So WordCurious simply had to happen.

Do you make any money from this site?

No, this is just for fun. If the site becomes popular, I'll probably put some Google Adsense ads on it to try to make a little money. But for now I'm just doing this to have something fun to share with people who have the same interest in languages.

Why do some images have an ugly gray background?

You're using Internet Explorer 6, which doesn't have good support for some of the graphics used on this site. If possible upgrade to IE 7 or use Firefox instead - IE 6 is pretty outdated now. Or, complain. If I hear enough complaints I'll come up with a workaround.

How come when I click to edit a word, the list doesn't shrink back to the right size?

It's a bug, I'm working on a fix for it. It only happens on Internet Explorer, so you won't be affected if you're using Firefox or Safari. I'll have a fix in place soon.

Why does the design of this site suck?

I'm a programmer, not a designer. If you're a designer, are feeling charitable, and want to create a new stylesheet or logo for me, send over your work. If I put it up on the site, I'll give you permanent credit.
